In March 2026, Adidas unveiled the prototype of a new 3D-printed basketball shoe developed under its "Project R.A.P." initiative. Following a period of refinement and optimization, the release plan for this highly innovative professional basketball shoe has been finalized. According to information obtained by Nanji Bear, the shoe is named "BB.01 Additive," with an official launch date of July 14, 2026, and an official retail price of $250. The BB.01 Additive features a mid-top silhouette tailored for on-court performance, constructed from three core components: a 3D-printed midsole, a textile inner sleeve, and a rubber outsole; the extended 3D-printed midsole also serves as the shoe's structural shell. The shoe's signature lattice design strikes an optimal balance between foot support, upper flexibility, and overall comfort during play. The R&D team achieved functional zoning by adjusting lattice density: high-density structures are employed in key load-bearing areas—such as the toe, heel, and arch—to ensure stability, while low-density structures are used on the sides to allow ample room for natural foot flexion. This 3D-printed basketball shoe made its public debut during the NCAA March Madness tournament, where University of Kansas Jayhawks player Darryn Peterson wore a prototype in competition, giving the public their first firsthand look at this innovative footwear. Consumers can purchase the shoe directly via the dedicated Adidas Confirmed app. The BB.01 Additive is a flagship product of Adidas’s Project R.A.P. (Radical Athlete Perception), an initiative focused on the development and commercialization of customized 3D-printed athletic gear; the project has previously launched 3D-printed soccer cleats, and professional footwear for American football is currently in the pipeline, as Adidas continues to expand and refine its portfolio of 3D-printed sports equipment.
